Golf stars of the future will be able to train all year round thanks to a new golf facility at a leading independent school.

Whitgift School, in Croydon, has installed a new practice golfing area within their school grounds which has allowed them to add golf as a major part of the curriculum. The independent day school, which educates 1,200 students aged 10-18 from the South East of England, can now offer students training and coaching using equipment that is specified by professional golfers. Its alumni already include professional rugby, football and cricket players working at UK clubs.

Neil Kendrick, Master in charge of Golf and ex-Surrey cricketer, says: “Traditionally, the UK has lost many golf stars to American colleges, because of their excellent facilities, but the Huxley Golf installation at Whitgift School will allow us to train the golf pro’s of the future on our own turf. Many schools have to travel to nearby clubs to be able to play the sport, but we can now use that time to give students even more teaching and practice in our own dedicated space.”

Dr Christopher Barnett, Headmaster, says: “Whitgift already has some of the finest sports facilities of any school.  Our on-site golf facility allows us to extend the curriculum to include the sport for every boy, and give our students the best chance to develop their talents to the fullest extent.”

The Installation at Whitgift School

Whitgift School has chosen a bespoke setup from Huxley Golf, the PGA official supplier and installer of premier all-weather putting and chipping greens and who have carried out installations for some of the world’s top golf clubs and tour professionals. 

The installation consists of two separate areas on the Whitgift site, which was previously unused land and constructed within a one month period. The upper area is made up of a 150sq yard golf green, several chipping stations and a tee area for pitch shots. The lower area contains a 100sq yard putting green and four square cage practice nets, all surrounded by Huxley Golf’s pathway material.

Ken Emmins, Estates Manager, says: “The installation is easy for Whitgift School to maintain because of the high quality surfaces that Huxley Golf are renowned for. Bar clearing leaves, the hardwearing and durable surfaces will only need attention once or twice a year, whereas natural turf requires almost daily maintenance.”
